Truphone, Mobile VoIP

July 26th, 2007

Truphone is a VoIP service, but not of any kind, it’s a mobile VoIP service based in U.K. I have been using it with great satisfaction since mid-June. It’s currently in beta and is you sign up before September 30, you can make free calls to 40 countries. The catch is that your phone to be connected to the internet.

There are very few phones in the world that can go on the internet via WiFi and that is very unfortunate, because it’s such a great service and it’s so much cheaper than using the minutes given by your carrier.

Upon joining, you get a $2-credit and send SMS, have a voicemail and make calls for free. That $2 will actually only be handy when you call countries that are not part of the free countries list.

However, there is one downside depending on where you live and I am affected by it because I’m in Montreal. Truphone will give you a new phone number when you sign up and it may not be appropriate for your area which means that when people dial your Truphone number, it may be a long distance call for them. They gave me a number for Seattle. That blows, I don’t know anybody in Seattle.

Other than that, Truphone is a great service that you should use if you can. I’m using it with a Nokia N95 and a prepaid plan. Very cheap stuff.
