Online IM
I really like the ability to work online. What it means is that there is no need to install anything, and that leads to the ability to do things anywhere on any machine which allows tremendous flexibility.
I haven’t voluntarily opened an Office tool in a long time except when someone sends me a file that needs it or when I want to setup a page for printing.
For a few months, I have even stopped using Instant Messaging softwares like AIM, ICQ, Windows Live Messenger (MSN) and Yahoo Messenger.
Instead, I use Meebo which supports a bunch of protocols. I get to see my conversation history to remind me of stuff wherever I go and all I need is a browser which I do believe is something installed on every computer.
The only drawback is that there is no file transfer, but that really doesn’t matter along with a whole bunch of other features that aren’t there, but are useless anyways. I say it’s instant messaging, so keep it instantaneous and clean.
KoolIM and RadiusIM are other online instant messaging services. They didn’t work out for me. Why did they feel the need to put “IM” in the name? It’s not “kooler”.
