The Periodic Spiral After the Periodic Table
In high school, I was taught about the periodic table. Even though I don’t remember much, I do remember that the way it is constructed is quite simple and logical.
I just bumped into the periodic spiral that was published in The New York Times, not so long ago. Apparently, many new redesign of the table have been suggested over the years, but none of them are good enough to replace the traditional periodic table. I guess the purpose of looking for a new design is to add all those new elements that are absent from the current table.
The most popular suggestion is that spiral that shows hydrogen’s relationship to other elements. I can certainly see the logic of the organization of the elements in that shape, but it’s rather difficult to quickly see all the elements of a period.
It’s an interesting design.
