Design Break

October 22nd, 2006

Half the semester has passed.

In the last week, the Ecole de Design (Design School) of UQAM has been quite a mess. Students were everywhere in the workroom and the workshop in the basement. They were all working on their projects for the presentation before the school break that starts this week.

Last thursday, half the second year students were showcasing their lamps and chairs in the Cafe Design, the Design School cafeteria. The other half were presenting their proposition of a YMCA.

The senior year student who are in industrial design presented chocolate boxes/containers and bamboo floors that had to transform into something which I didn’t fully understand.

Those who are in architectural design (that’s me) had to make a model, scaled to 1:200, of Berri street between Cherrier and Ontario. The project was to make a proposition to make the place more pleasant such that people would stay there and relax, rather than merely walking/driving by, as they do now. There were six groups, so there were six models in our workshop (photo below) and each of them were over two meters long.

While making our model, we though of using Micro Machines to add cars and people with needles, but it turned out that the cars were too big and the people were too small for the 1:200 scale.

After our presentations, we had some wine to celebrate the end the first half of the semester. This last week has been very tiresome. It has also been very fun to watch the evolution of the projects and see the final results.

I would add more photos, but I don’t feel like uploading 112 photos. After all, I’m on a break.
