After Flickr Beta Comes Flickr Gamma

May 16th, 2006

flickr gamma photosEverybody has noticed that these days everything comes in beta. Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have all followed that trend.

flickr, owned by Yahoo for a while now, has decided to get out of beta and get a step further into gamma. Everything remains always in progress, but why must there be a label on it. Soon, softwares won’t be release as version 1 2 3 4 5 anymore, but they will all go over the whole greek alphabet. Maybe I am going to label my project versions with shortest, shorter, short, long, longer, longest and Super Long and it still won’t be over, name-wise. There seems to be a fear of finalizing products.

flickr gamma organizrFlickr Gamma has a slightly different interface. The logo remains the same, except that it has the word gamma on top of flickr. The main photo page lost the right column which had links to profile and tags. Now, all the menus can drop dead down. I like it this way. One of the reasons why I was reluctant to create sets is because the big sized photos would only occupy one column, now photos is all we see on the page.

The organize page is completely different, it fills up the whole page. I haven’t used it yet to say how it is to work, but it looks good. The only thing I don’t like is that I can’t resize the area that contains the photos. It would be nice to see more photos at once.

When linking to photos on flickr, we can find a new reminder

Remember! Flickr Terms of Service specify that if you post a Flickr photo on an external website, the photo must link back to its photo page.
